Thessaloniki

With no idea what I would be doing once I arrived I booked a flight to Thessaloniki, Greece.  Before leaving I did as much research on the area as possible, but in reality had very little in the way of plans.  My room for the first night in Thessaloniki was booked but that is all.

Bodensee und dem Rhein

The Rhine river is the the largest river in Europe.  It flows from the Alps in Switzerland north to The Netherlands where it meets with the sea.  In terms an American may better understand -if the Rhine where the Mississippi river then Minnesota would be Switzerland, and The Netherlands would be Louisiana.

 

We drove up the Rhine river towards Switzerland, and even entered into the Swiss Alps for one day.  But the vast majority of our trip was spent on the German side of Lake Constance.  The history we found along this river was incredible.

This is a monument to German unity.  Destroyed by U.S. artilery during WWII.  It is found where the Rhine and Mosel rivers meet.  The coat of arms of each German state surrounds the giant statue of William I.

Driving In France Is Expensive

The highways in France are a privaledge for those who can afford the tolls.  On busy days these toll roads become parking lots.  We stopped at the old Chicago style toll stops every few kilometers.  And at around 5 euro each, it adds up quickly.
